Australian tufted carpet market brief

8 May 2008

According to data compiled by the Carpet Institute of Australia, wool's share of the tufted carpet market in Australia fell in the September 2007 quarter mainly due to a surge of imports of man-made fiber carpets during 2007.

During the December quarter 2007 some of that fall was recovered however, with domestic market supplies of tufted wool carpet were 5% below a year earlier. Domestic production was only marginally lower, with most of the decline due to a dip in imports.

According to trade reports, the demand environment for carpet was mixed in Australia in 2007, with the commercial sector strong but the residential sector more subdued. The Australian commercial carpet market is being buoyed by the mining resource boom and high business confidence levels. This has resulted in good demand for carpets in the commercial sector with carpet tiles benefiting the most. In contrast, the residential carpet market in Australia is relatively subdued, having been constrained by a number of interest rate rises.
