A look at the consolidated data reveals the monthly volume of NZ wool exported in March 2008 was significantly lower than in March 2007. However, this big decline must be treated with caution, as it was caused partially by a reduced number of working days in March due to the Easter break falling earlier this year.

An update of economic conditions at the start of the second quarter by the IMF research department predicts a deceleration in global economic growth for 2008, compared to its forecasts made earlier in the year. The IMF expects global growth in 2008 to slow 0.5% lower than the forecast made in January 2008.

Consolidated data for 2007 shows the imports of chiefly-wool apparel into Japan dropped year on year in volume terms. The large decrease was attributed to the very strong drop in wool knitwear imports, and a decrease in womenswear imports. With men's suits imports remaining relatively strong during the year, chiefly-wool menswear imports were sustained at a level only slightly lower than a year before.
