Japanese wool yarn prices, as an indication of global prices, continued to rise in recent months to September in US$ terms. At the same time, raw wool apparel prices eased in August and September 2007 relative to the higher prices in May and June.

The solid export performance of South African wool for the 2006/07 season ending in June was backed by relatively good production conditions, regardless of reported average to mostly below average rainfall during the 2006/07 summer period in some areas (west in particular). The five top importing coutries for South Arican wool in 2006/07 were China, Italy, Czech Republic and Germany.

Japan's imports of wool men's suits in July were up strongly from a year earlier. Imports from China continued to grow however China's country share was down slightly compared to July 2006. Imports from Vietnam continued to gain pace in July, making Vietnam the second largest source after China. Despite the rise in raw wool prices since the start of 2007, the average unit price of suits imported from China was only slightly higher this July.

For the 2006/07 season, data from Statistics New Zealand show that total NZ wool exports (greasy, scoured, carbonised, tops, noils and waste) were moderately lower than in 2005/06. Most of the decline occurred in the final months of the season when exports of greasy and scoured wool fell due to softer Chinese demand.
