Leading Sheep

Leading Sheep is a framework for increasing the adoption of new technologies and practices by the Queensland wool industry. This increase will be delivered through the implementation of a focused technology transfer program conducted in collaboration with key industry stakeholders.
The project will deliver its activities through a network of regional groups, which represent key stakeholders.
Each of the groups will prioritise outcomes specific to their regions and provide recommendations for activities to achieve these.
The project team and project partners, under the guidance of regional coordinators and extension officers, will undertake the delivery of activities.
These activities will include training, workshops, field days, demonstration properties and technical information delivery.

More about the program
| Program information | Details |
| Locations |
For logistical reasons the state has been divided into four main areas on land types:
Locations:
- Open Mitchell Grass/Central West
- Mulga Country/South West
- Box/Sandalwood/Southern Inland
- Traprock/South East |
| Number of groups involved |
Each region has a coordinating committee of 3-4 people made up of producers and other industry stakeholders. Each regional coordinating committee has the services of a coordinator and an extension officer. |
| Benefits |
The project will focus on five major outcomes that have been identified by industry as the key constraints on productivity:
- Reduced predation
- Higher reproduction rates
- Increased value of wool and meat
- More effective parasite control
- Improved resource management
Through active participation in the project, producers will be given the opportunity to adopt technology that is beneficial to their enterprise. |
| Partners / sponsors |
Leading Sheep is an initiative of Australian Wool Innovation Limited (AWI) in partnership with the Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries along with support from AgForce. |
| Activities |
Regional coordinating committees meet four times a year and prioritise issues relevant to their region. They then decide on how best to address these issues and organise events that will transfer the information to their regional network group. The regional network group is made up of all interested producers and service providers in the region. |
| Management |
Strategic support for the project comes through a Project Advisory Panel that meets four times a year. This panel is made up of wool producers and representatives involved in the project partnership. |

| How to get involved? |
Involvement by producers at a regional level is through the regional network group. Registration simply involves supplying contact details to the local extension officer. These contact details allow a two-way flow of information to occur between the regional coordinating committee and the regional network group. |
